THE MAN CALLED BOWDRY

Not much is known for certain about the man called Bowdry. The bare facts are as follows. Sometime around 1880 he rode into Gray Buttes, Nevada--a long forgotten town--stayed for a time at the Pollard shack out in the hills and, after the old man was killed, made relentless war on the neighboring 3-Bar outfit which was run by the Wadley clan, known thieves and rustlers. Then he disappeared, to be seen no more, nor was he ever heard of again.
He was the only one who knew how so many men ended up dead in the boulder-strewn hills around the old Pollard shack, and he never told anyone, unless it was the wild and beautiful redheaded woman named Lucy Reardon.

There were those who doubted if his real name was Bowdry. Some even suspected that he was really old man Pollard's long-lost son and that his name was Will Pollard, a mysterious gunfighter who roamed the early West. But before the stranger appeared it had never occurred to anyone that old man Pollard might have a son, and most would have laughed at the notion that he was related in any way to the legendary gunfighter who happened to have the same last name.
No one knew very much about the old man. No one even knew what his first name was. The people of Gray Buttes just called him old man Pollard or old Pollard, and smiled in a certain condescending way when they mentioned him.

The Man Called Bowdry eBook Van Holt

This is an enjoyable, quick read with the classic western theme of good guy tries to cure an injustice against the bad guys, with the good guy being a one-man army, finds a girl, and off they ride into the sunset. The author’s descriptions of the scenery, etc. make you feel like you are there, and if you like the classic pulp westerns and have a couple of hours to spare I would recommend this one as it was an interesting diversion to the genres I've been reading lately.

I originally picked this up during a Kindle promotion for just 99 cents and, as I type this review, I see the pricing has reverted to $2.99 cents for the Kindle version: you’ll get more entertainment value out of this one than $2.99 and I would recommend it.

The Man Called Bowdry eBook Van Holt Reviews

I've read three westerns by Van Holt this one, "Riding for Revenge", and "Blood in the Hills". All three share the same basic plot about a man out to avenge the murder of his father or parents. Of the three, this was the only one I really liked, and it was pretty good. The dialog is better and there are a couple subplots going.
This is a well written story of the old West. The product description provided contains a very fair synopsis of the story line. You will get to know the hero pretty well. It is him and several revolvers, a shotgun and a rifle against a bunch of bad guys. I enjoyed this tale and I believe most fans of this Genre will like it . In my opinion, this is a solid three and a half star Western.
good. read it on my kindle.
This was a story that really held together around the central character. The story only takes a few days to tell but had lots of secondary characters and unexpected turns of events. The suspense was sustained throughout the novel. It carried mystery in the relation of Bowdry to the beleagured old man he tries to avenge, romance with an unexpected ending, and plenty of western justice meted out to the gang of outlaws and bullies who keep messing up. Bowdry's defence of his position in the final gun-fight was full of inventiveness along with the final execution of his shadowy 'helper' in the black suit. A very satisfying read that has made me open to other Van Holt westerns.
This was my first Van Holt book. I have been searching for a replacement for Louis L'amour having read almost all his books. While not quite the same style and missing the small details and description of the old west which I enjoy in L'amour books, I would say Van Holt has written well. The story was definitely a page turner and good plot. I liked the salty main character.

I have to stop comparing to L'amour or hoping for a similar author because I guess its impossible to write like L'amour who was born in 1908 and has done part of his research by speaking to the old timers who remembered the old frontier and its last days the way it actually was. That said I, am looking forward to reading more of Holt.
I started off truly enjoying the writing style. It is NOT an action story at all. In fact, it moves rather slowly, but the descriptions, dialogue and overall writing style are very inviting. That is until about 40% through the book, where errors are glaring and interfere with reading a great deal ("hose" instead of "horse"; "bind" instead of "mind"; "cold" instead of "could", repeatedly). Very distracting and really took away from the read for me. The proof reader apparently got back on the job on the last third of the book and all was well again. Without this significant issue I would have given the book 4 stars.
THIS IS A REALLY GOOD WESTERN BOOK ABOUT A GUNFIGHTER WHO RETURNS HOME FOR NO CLEAR REASON. HE STOPS AT THE SALOON FOR A DRINK (AS ALL COWBOYS DO) AND OVERHEARS A CONVERSATION ABOUT OLD MAN POLLARD. THEN VISITS THE OLD MAN AND THEY DON'T GET ALONG VERY WELL. A LITTLE LATER, THE OLD MAN GETS KILLED AND "ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE". IN A ROUND ABOUT WAY, THE WADLEY CLAN IS BROUGHT INTO THE PICTURE. THERE IS ALSO A FEW MORE CHARACTERS WELL DEVELOPED INTO THE STORY. IT IS A REALLY GOOD STORY WITH A SURPRISE OR TWO. YOU WILL NEVER BE READY FOR THE LAST CHAPTER. IF YOU ARE A WESTERN STORY FAN, THIS IS ONE YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS. THIS IS A BOOK WELL WORTH THE PRICE, EVEN AFTER A PRICE ADJUSTMENT. HAPPY READING.
